Primary production is the capture or extraction of fuels or energy from natural energy flows, the biosphere and natural reserves of fossil fuels within the national territory in a form suitable for use. Inert matter removed from the extracted fuels and quantities reinjected, flared or vented are not included.

No data available for Faroe Islands or Åland.

As of the update in March 2021, this table has been revised. This is due to a transition to new dissemination codes for energy products at Eurostat. These new codes were created based on the Standard International Energy Product Classification present in the International Recommendations for Energy Statistics and adapted by Eurostat in the framework of the Standard Code Lists initiative.

product

Product grouping based on new Eurostat dissemenation codes.

reporting country

Finland

Includes Åland.

EU

European Union - 27 countries (from 2020)

product

Solid fuels

A combination of Solid fossil fuels (i.e. coal), Peat and peat products and Oil shale and oil sands.

Oil and petroleum products (excluding bio fuels)

Oil products (excluding biofuel portion).

Gas

A combination of Natural gas and Manufactured gases.

Nuclear heat

The total amount of heat generated by nuclear reactors for the production of electricity or for other useful applications of heat.

Heat

All heat produced, except for heat produced by autoproducers for their own use and not sold. All other forms of heat are reported as use of products from which the heat was produced.

Electricity

Electricity is reported as use of products from which the electricity was produced.

Non-renewable waste

Non-renewable waste is a combination of Non-renewable municipal waste and Industrial waste (non-renewable).

Renewables and biofuels

Renewables and biofuels is a product aggregate equal to the sum of Renewable municipal waste (the portion of municipal waste which is of biological origin) and Biofuels (a product aggregate equal to the sum of solid biofuels, biogas and liquid biofuels).

Renewables and biofuels, of which hydropower

The electricity generated from the potential and kinetic energy of water in hydroelectric plants (the electricity generated in pumped storage plants is not included). Hydro is a product aggregate equal to the sum of pure hydro plants, mixed hydro plants and pure pumped storage plants.

Renewables and biofuels, of which wind energy

The kinetic energy of wind converted into electricity in wind turbines. Wind is a product aggregate equal to the sum of on-shore wind and off-shore wind.

Renewables and biofuels, of which solar, tide, wave and ocean

A combination of solar energy (solar thermal energy (radiation exploited for solar heat) and solar photo-voltaic)) and Tide, wave, ocean energy (mechanical energy derived from tidal movement, wave motion or ocean current and exploited for electricity generation).

Renewables and biofuels, of which renewable wastes and biofuels

A combination of Renewable municipal waste (the portion of municipal waste which is of biological origin) and Biofuels (the sum of solid biofuels, biogas and liquid biofuels).

Renewables and biofuels, of which geothermal energy

The energy available as heat from within the earth's crust, usually in the form of hot water or steam.

Renewables and biofuels, of which ambient heat

Energy produced by heat pumps driven by electricity or other supplementary energy and extracts energy from the air, the ground or the water (and converts/transfers this into energy to be used elsewhere). Cooling excluded.
